In addition to our Adult and Youth Volunteer opportunities, Long Beach Medical Center has established the following programs in collaboration with the Long Beach School District. Developed as part of the student’s curriculum, these programs introduce teens and young adults to volunteerism, community service and career opportunities in the health care field.
Long Beach High School Programs
Health Sciences
The Introduction to Health Professions course provides students with an overview of concepts relevant to all health professions. Students are provided with opportunities to interact with health professionals through guest lecturers and shadow health care professionals at Long Beach Medical Center and in the community.
Internship
Long Beach Medical Center and the Long Beach High School offer a 10-week, 40-hour internship program pairing students with Medical Center mentors to explore health care careers fields and hands-on experience in Physical Therapy, Medical Education, Rehabilitation Nursing Unit, Food & Nutrition, Diabetes Education Center, Pharmacy and Radiology. Each student maintains a journal of their experience and attends monthly meetings.
Vocational Life Skills
The Vocational Life Skills Program provides Special Education students with hands-on experience to learn practical employment skills. Long Beach High School students come weekly with school staff to work in the Business Office, Purchasing, Laundry, and Food and Nutrition Departments with our staff.
Our University/Post-Graduate Program
We also offer a program designed for students who wish to contribute volunteer hours as a pre-requisite to graduate school acceptance and/or to explore a career field before commitment to a degree program.
