The John B. Cullen Rehabilitation Unit

A Designated Unit Focused on Rehabilitation

The John B. Cullen Rehabilitation Unit offers acute rehabilitation services to patients with all types of disabilities.  As a 15-bed unit committed to restorative therapies, patients benefit from the team approach and camaraderie that develops among patients and staff.

The John B. Cullen Rehabilitation Unit is situated on the second floor in Long Beach Medical Center’s East wing, with beautiful waterviews of Reynolds Channel.  We believe that this peaceful, waterside setting contributes to the healing and recovery of our patients and adds a unique wellness quality to the services we provide.

Our Rehabilitation Team

Our staff is comprised of highly trained rehabilitation nurses, physical and occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, respiratory therapists, registered dietitians, certified social workers, and recreational and dance therapists, all under the supervision of our board-certified Medical Director and Chief of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Pericles Hadjiyane, M.D.

Staff members function as a team, working together to help restore each individual to their maximum potential.

Upon admission, your rehabilitation team will create an individualized therapy program with your specific goals in mind.   Our multidisciplinary approach includes a comprehensive plan with a focus on mobility training, strengthening, coordination, activities of daily living, speech and language skills, and patient and family education.

Why Choose Long Beach Medical Center?

It’s important to be confident about the quality of care you or a loved one will receive when entering a rehabilitation program.

There are several reasons why you should consider The John B. Cullen Rehabilitation Unit at Long Beach Medical Center for your rehabilitation needs:

  • We’re hospital-based.   As a hospital-based program, you have the full resources of the Medical Center at your disposal, including 24/7 physician coverage.

  • Our staff are experts.  Our staff includes an innovative team of board-certified physiatrists, rehabilitation nurses, social workers, nutritionists, psychologists, social workers and art and dance therapists who have been recruited for their expertise as well as their enthusiastic approach to patient care.

  • We offer personal attention.  Because our 15-bed unit is comparatively small, our patients receive individualized care from a consistent team of rehabilitation specialists.

  • We have a broad continuum of care.  Long Beach Medical Center offers a seamless continuum that offers progressive levels of care under one umbrella.  Patients are attracted to our superb acute care rehabilitation program and leave impressed with the smooth transition to our sub-acute (short term), outpatient and home care programs as their recovery progresses.

  • We train the best.  As a training site for some of the future’s brightest physicians, we host a post-graduate Residency Program in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in affiliation with the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine.  This accredited program ensures that the latest therapies and treatments are being offered at Long Beach Medical Center.

  • High patient satisfaction rates. Our patient satisfaction surveys demonstrate our success in helping individuals recovery from accidents, illness or disease.  We consistently receive high marks from patients who praise our staff’s knowledge, courtesy, and enthusiasm.  In fact, a large number of patients say they would recommend our rehabilitation services to a person with a similar diagnosis.

  • We’ve earned accreditation.  Long Beach Medical Center has earned accreditation by The Joint Commission following a rigorous survey and having met their standards of excellence.  Accreditation by The Joint Commission is considered to be the “gold standard” of quality care among health care organizations in the United States.

About the John B. Cullen Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Center

Thanks to the generosity of Mrs. Doris Cullen, patients in the Medical Center’s inpatient rehabilitation unit now have a more pleasant environment.  Cosmetic touches and new specialized therapeutic equipment enhance the patient experience both aesthetically and clinically.

Mrs. Cullen, a long-time resident of the Point Lookout community, established the gift in memory of her late husband, Jo
hn “Bebe” Cullen.  A warm, kind, and humble man, Mr. Cullen was one of the driving forces in developing the concept of the modern day grocery store.  Eighty-two years later, the King Kullen grocery stores are a successful, third-generation family business with a strong commitment to the people of Long Island.

The Cullen donation is a testament to Mr. Cullen’s wonderful experience as a patient on the unit.  With a twinkle in her eye, Mrs. Cullen reflects that her husband was so fond of the rehabilitation facility and its staff that he wanted to extend his stay when it was discharge time.

For the Cullen family, the gift is a permanent reminder of the sterling character and loving nature of an exceptional husband, father and grandfather.
